Today, we’re diving deep into the heart of the media landscape to explore a critical issue: the imbalance in how women are represented. Despite making up nearly half of the population, women are strikingly underrepresented in media, especially in powerful roles behind the camera. A study from the Sundance Institute and Women In Film Los Angeles revealed that from 2002 to 2012, only 29.8% of filmmakers at the Sundance Film Festival were women. That’s less than one-third! Now, think about what that really means. With so few women leading the charge in film, the stories being told inevitably reflect a limited perspective. This underrepresentation is compounded by the way women are typically portrayed in media. Many characters are boxed into traditional roles—homemakers, victims, or accessories to the male lead. Meanwhile, men often dominate the narrative, depicted as powerful figures, strong leaders, and adventurers.
