This initiative, backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed to tackle malaria by releasing genetically modified mosquitoes. Sounds straightforward, right? Well, not quite. Burkina Faso made headlines back in 2019 as the first country to allow the release of these GM mosquitoes, designed to reduce the transmission of malaria, a deadly disease that affected over 8 million people in the country in 2023 alone, resulting in more than 16,000 deaths.
